Best dairy-free protein bars: the verified list

This page is for people who choose to avoid milk, whether for an allergy, lactose or another reason. It lists protein bars whose makers say they are dairy-free or made without dairy, in the maker’s own words, on the maker’s own product page, with the nutrition label of one named flavor verified in our database.

A bar that looks dairy-free from its ingredient list does not qualify. We do not decide what a bar is. The maker’s words do, and we quote them exactly, with where they sit, the URL and the date we read them.

Reviewed by Melissa Mitri, MS, RDN, on 2026-10-30. She reviewed the draft of this list of 25 Oct 2026.

The list

We checked 24 of the 25 verified bars in our database, and five qualify, listed in alphabetical order. Each entry quotes the maker’s statement and then the cross-contact line it states, because a bar made without dairy ingredients can still be made in a facility that handles milk. If you avoid milk due to an allergy, the cross-contact line is the one to read.

Why a Contains line is not enough

In the United States a food’s major allergens have to be declared, in the ingredient list or in a Contains line: milk, eggs, fish, crustacean shellfish, tree nuts, peanuts, wheat, soybeans and sesame. That is the whole allergen declaration. A label that declares no milk tells you only that the maker did not declare milk as an ingredient. It is not a dairy-free statement, and we do not treat it as one. Cross-contact lines (“may contain”, “made in a facility that also processes”) are voluntary in the US, so a label without one does not tell you whether the bar is made on shared-ingredient equipment or in a shared-ingredient facility. If you avoid milk for an allergy, read the cross-contact line on the pack in your hand.

How we chose

The rule: a bar is listed only when (1) its nutrition panel for one named flavor is verified in our database, with a last verified date; (2) the maker states that the bar is dairy-free, or made without dairy, in its own words on its own product page, and we hold the words verbatim with where they sit, the URL and the date we read them; and (3) nothing the maker says on that page contradicts the statement, such as a Contains line naming milk, or a page that says the bar is not suitable for people with a milk allergy.

Words count when they are the maker’s own on its product page, including the words on a badge, an icon or a label image there. A product name does not count. When a maker says “made without dairy ingredients”, we quote those words as printed.

We read the product pages of 24 of the 25 verified bars in our database on Oct 24, 2026. Their labels were verified between Sep 22, 2026 and Oct 23, 2026. A statement covers only what it says: when it sits on one flavor’s page and is about that flavor, the entry’s heading names the flavor, and the line’s other flavors are not covered. Testing status for each bar, with the date we checked the registry, is on its listing page.

Not on this page yet: Gatorade Recover Protein Bars, CLIF BUILDERS Protein Bar and Lenny & Larry’s Cookie-fied Bar, which we have not published yet, and MET-Rx Big 100, verified but not part of this read. Protein powders are outside this bar list.

Frequently asked

Is dairy-free the same as lactose-free? No. Lactose-free products remove the milk sugar, but may still contain milk protein. We quote the maker’s exact words and nothing more.

Why not list bars with no milk in the Contains line? Because that would be our inference. The maker has made no statement, and our rules forbid inferring an allergen status.

Is a vegan bar dairy-free? Not on this page unless the maker says so. A vegan statement is about ingredients, and several vegan bars in our set carry a cross-contact line that names milk. Our vegan list is at /best/vegan-protein-bars/.
